If you are a below-average skill player, SBMM probably feels pretty good, and if you are an elite player it probably doesn't make much difference.
But for many of us who range from somewhere around average to pretty good, SBMM results in a lot of frustrating games, a lot of games with bad connections, and as a consequence, a genuine sense of weariness and ennui towards the Crucible. No, instead I want to argue that what SBMM sets out to do is inconsistent with the design of Destiny as a whole and the reasons we play it.
SBMM-based Crucible does not fit cohesively into the game, and it is destructive towards both it and the community. I want to focus this argument around one question: Why do we play Destiny? I met lots of cool and interesting people, some Matchmaking boulder playing, some not, and got deep into the game.
I had no interest in PvP at first, but my friends pulled me in, and predictably enough this is Year One after allI got absolutely destroyed. Most games I went 0.
I tried and failed the Thorn quest twice before managing it with the help of axion bolts, Voidfang Vestments and a purple 77 Wizard, which probably marked the moment I started to not entirely suck in the crucible.
Almost all of my friends were better than me, some a LOT better, and I tried very hard to catch them up. I read Crucible Playbook, I watched vids, I watched vids of my own games and critiqued them. Bit by bit I got better.
I have every exotic, the platinum trophy, and multiple tier builds on my characters, etc etc. Which brings me back to the question: Many of us play Destiny because our friends are here. We play because we like the people we play with and we enjoy taking on challenges together.
The experience of beating a raid a first time with friends, or going to the Lighthouse with friends is incredibly satisfying. When it comes to progression, Destiny is particularly strong, and I think this is a major part of its success.
In Destiny we progress in two fundamental ways: The progression of character power comes from the RPG, the progression of skill comes from the action game. There is only so much you can do PvE, whereas the Crucible is endlessly variable.
As its name suggests, the Crucible is where you are really tested.
And there was a real thrill for me in seeing my game improve. Until SBMM came along and screwed it all up.White matchmaking in Kalgoorlie-Boulder will always be amazing after be2’s tips for the finest restaurants and cafés to visit with your partner.
